Why I'm Starting This Blog

Truth be told, I've spent a good portion of my adult life tangled-up in poetry. Reading it, writing it, teaching it, coaxing it out of other people, and returning to it again and again. If you’re here, it might be because you share some of these impulses, or at least have a glimpse into poetry’s worth.

Over the years I’ve worked with writers at every level: some brand new to poetry, others who’ve been at it for years but still want to grow. What I’ve realized is that people don’t only need encouragement (although that helps); they also need tools. They need the language for what they’re trying to do. This happens through examples, models, clear ways in. I find poetry to be the doorway I can use to help writers find confidence for any genre they decide to try. (More about that here.)

I've personally and painfully known the hesitation and fear that comes over some of us when we put our thoughts (and selves) down on a page. Our spoken words quickly disappear into the air, but writing them down carries a whole different kind of commitment! That’s why I’ve thought about starting this blog for years, and now I'm finally doing it.

This won’t be just a collection of thoughts, although I certainly have plenty of those. I want this space to be a resource, a journal of ideas, and most of all, an invitation, a place to reflect, explain, learn, and explore poetry.

Types of Posts You’ll Find Here

Usable guides to poetry craft:

I enjoy writing about poetic devices, techniques, forms, prompts, and how to use them with intention. My hope is to offer real, usable insights you can apply in your own writing of any genre.

Profiles of poets worth knowing:

To be a strong poet, or writer of any kind, I believe you need to read widely. There are countless poets and books out there, and it’s normal not to connect with all of them. Here, I’ll share a variety of voices and styles for you to sample.

Personal reflections from my poetry path:

I’ll write about my own journey as a poet and writer: what I’m learning, what I’m rethinking, what I wish I’d known sooner.

Teaching and coaching insights:

As a writing coach, I’m always paying attention to what helps people grow. I’ll share what works (and what doesn’t) when it comes to building confidence, developing craft, and sustaining a creative life.

Who It’s For

  • Students and developing writers seeking encouragement and maybe a few surprises

  • Writers who want to improve

  • Teachers looking for new ways to connect

  • Readers of poetry who want to feel included in the conversation

  • Even skeptics and "secret scribblers"

You can subscribe if you’d like updates, or simply drop by when you need a nudge or a new poem or idea to chew on. I’ll be here either way...
